FamilyAlbum Alternatives: 6 Options Worth Considering in 2026

The Trove Team6 min read

Short answer

Trove keeps photos free and unlimited, adds milestones, face grouping and plain-English search at no charge, and then does the part FamilyAlbum does not: every Sunday it emails one curated edition — the week's best, laid out, with a short written summary — to relatives with no app and no account. FamilyAlbum's free plan is still hard to leave and mostly you should not; unlimited photos and storage, permanently, plus eleven free prints a month for every member, is the best offer in the category. So the question is what specifically pushed you here. Long videos? The free tier caps each one at two minutes, and Premium raises that to ten rather than removing it. Milestones or journals? FamilyAlbum puts them behind Premium Family at $5.99 a month, and only Admins can write them. Search? Comment text only, on the $109-a-year Pro tier. But the most common answer is the quiet one: the album is full and the only thing anyone gets is a notification. That is not a storage problem, and no amount of free gigabytes fixes it.

Worth saying up front: FamilyAlbum's free plan — unlimited photos, unlimited videos, unlimited storage, permanently — is the most generous offer in this category, and we are not going to pretend it is easy to beat on those terms.

So if you are looking for an alternative, you probably want something specific. Here are the six reasons people actually switch.

Reason 1: the two-minute video cap

This is the most common one. FamilyAlbum's free plan caps each video at two minutes, which is fine for clips and useless for a school concert, a nativity play or a first-steps video you did not want to cut short.

Options: upgrade to FamilyAlbum Premium Family ($5.99/month or $59/year), which raises the cap to ten minutes a video rather than removing it, or move video to Google Photos and keep FamilyAlbum for stills. Trove allows 3 minutes per clip, with nothing to upgrade to — that is fair use on our side, not a plan. Worth knowing either way: FamilyAlbum resizes every upload, so the copy you download later is not your original.

Reason 2: relatives never open it

FamilyAlbum does alert people — a push notification when photos go up, an email with a link for browser-version invitees, and a compiled 1s Movie every three months. What it never sends is the photographs themselves, composed. The familiar arc follows: everyone installs it in month one, the notifications get muted by month three, and the album goes unopened.

If that is your problem, no amount of free storage fixes it, and neither does another notification. Trove is ours and it sends an edition instead: the week's best photos, laid out, with a short written summary, emailed every Sunday to your whole family, with no app and no account for recipients, free with unlimited recipients. Full comparison.

Reason 3: milestones and journals cost $5.99 a month

FamilyAlbum's milestones and monthly journal entries live in Personal Pages — per-child pages built automatically by facial recognition — and they are a Premium Family feature at $5.99 a month, with only Album Admins allowed to write the journal. There are no prompts. On the free plan none of it exists, and the "On This Day" slideshows are limited to three items.

Trove marks milestones free — first steps, first words, first tooth, birthdays, graduations and custom moments — and those lead the weekly edition and come back as flashbacks a year later, so the milestone is recorded and read. Face grouping, unlimited flashbacks and plain-English search are free too; FamilyAlbum charges $5.99 to $10.99 a month for its versions. Tinybeans ships a longer 300+ pre-written developmental checklist if ticking through a clinical-style list is specifically what you want — and it is on its free plan, so that one costs nothing. Tinybeans vs FamilyAlbum.

Reason 4: you actually wanted backup

If your real concern is that your photos exist safely somewhere and are findable, Google Photos does that better and cheaper — $19.99 a year for 100 GB — with the best search in the category. Worth noting that FamilyAlbum is barely competing here: it has no automatic camera-roll backup at all, and its only search reads the text of comments, on the $109-a-year Pro tier.

Reason 5: everyone is on iPhone anyway

Apple Shared Albums is free and already installed. Albums made in iOS 27 or later keep full resolution with no cap on photos or albums, and use the owner's iCloud storage; older albums are free of that storage but capped at 5,000 downsized photos. Since iOS 27 an Android or Windows relative can join and contribute from a browser too. It is the lowest-effort option that exists. Trove vs Apple Shared Albums.

Reason 6: a relative with no device

No app reaches someone without a screen, so the answer has to be printed. Famileo posts a printed newspaper of family photos built from the whole family's contributions, from $9.99/month in the US — and to any country in the world, with postage included. FamilyAlbum's own answer is worth knowing about too: its Digital Frame displays the album to a grandparent without them using the app at all. Trove vs Famileo.

Trove's answer to the same problem is the Paper Edition: a printed edition of your month, laid out automatically from photos already in your Trove — a cover photo and up to five more, captions and a short written summary — posted on the 1st as a folded self-mailer, so it arrives folded with no envelope and a photograph already showing. $4.99 a month including one mailing address, $4 a month for each extra address, US only for now. No app, no account, no wifi at their end.

You may not need to switch at all

Most of these gaps are complements rather than replacements. Keeping FamilyAlbum as your unlimited free archive and adding a free weekly edition on top costs nothing and solves the most common complaint.

Is there anything better than FamilyAlbum for free?+

Not for raw storage — its unlimited free plan is the strongest in the category, and the eleven free prints a month for every member make it stronger still. For getting the week in front of relatives, Trove's free plan includes unlimited photos, children and recipients and requires no app or account on the recipient's end, where FamilyAlbum requires an account. Trove also gives away milestones, face grouping, flashbacks and search, which FamilyAlbum charges $5.99 to $10.99 a month for.

What is the FamilyAlbum free plan video limit?+

Each video on the free plan is capped at two minutes. Storage itself is unlimited. Premium Family at $5.99/month or $59/year raises the cap to ten minutes per video — it does not remove it — along with adding Personal Pages and other extras. Note the eleven free prints a month are not a Premium benefit; every album member gets them on any plan.

Can I use FamilyAlbum and another app together?+

Yes, and it is often the best answer. FamilyAlbum works well as the unlimited free archive while something else composes and sends the week. Both free plans, so it costs nothing.

How do I move my photos out of FamilyAlbum?+

FamilyAlbum lets you download items one at a time on any plan, or in bulk on Premium Family Pro ($10.99/month or $109/year) — so if you want the whole album out at once, do it while that subscription is active. Either way what you get back is the resized copy, not your original, which is the strongest argument for keeping your own archive of the originals. There is no automatic migration between apps in this category, so expect a manual export and import.

Keep the free storage. Add the edition.

Trove emails one curated edition of the week to your whole family, every Sunday. Unlimited recipients, no app and no account for them, free forever.
